    OUR MISSION
The Denali Education Center was founded in 1989 in order to develop and implement research, education and communication programs that benefit the Denali Park bioregion, the state of Alaska, and our planet. We believe that wilderness provides an educational opportunity to teach and to share values common to all of us.

     THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!

Our 14th Annual Auction was the best one ever!!  We raised just over $64,000!!  Thank you to all of the businesses and individuals who generously donated items for the auction and thank you to all who attended to make this a magical night!  It was our most successful Auction to date.

The Taste of Denali Luau was PLENTIFUL and WONDERFUL!  A big THANK YOU to Chef Antony, Amanda Lovelady and all of the hardworking ARAMARK crew who kept us fed all night long.  You are all amazing.  ARAMARK donates thousands of dollars in food and labor to create the Taste of Denali event for the auction (among their many other generosities) and words cannot adequately express how grateful we are for this incredible donation.  Our very giving local community of eateries rounded out the food selections and provided desserts and we are awed to have so many wonderful neighbors and supporters.  THANK YOU!

Libations continued to flow throughout the night and we are very thankful to Midnight Sun Brewing Co. (Thanks for attending, Gary & Kim!), Moose's Tooth Brewing, Specialty Imports and Odom Corporation for providing a great selection of beverages for the auction goers.  Jamie, Ben and Meg, thank you for keeping the wait for a drink to a minimum.

Jersey Jones and Jimmy Sandy were again an UNSTOPPABLE team!  The bidding was lively and the night full of laughs and memories.  Thank you, Jerz & Jimmy.  We love you more than ever.

And then there are the Volunteers!  We were rich with board members and volunteers to help us get prepared, set-up and clean up this year with folks coming from as far away as Seattle, Seward, Anchorage and Fairbanks!  With the cost of fuel, this was indeed an amazing contribution.  THANK YOU to all of you who so selflessly give your time and energy for free.  You are an inspiration to all.

And lastly, THANK YOU to all who attended and took away the treasures we had amassed.  We hope you had as much fun as we did, and please let the businesses who supported us know how much their contributions mean to our community and the Denali Education Center.  The Auction has again proved itself to be the best event of the summer in Denali and we can't wait to see you all again next year!  Mark your calendars now for our 15th Annual Auction on August 1, 2009.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a SOLAR CAR!!! Last weeks Elderhostel group got a special treat when Marcelo da Luz stopped by in his solar car. The objective of his journey is to develop and build a solar car to set a world distance record. Hopefully he can find enough sun in Alaska to finish his journey! August 15th, 2008

Fall migration is underway, particularly for Denali's long distance migratory birds. The champion among birds in Denali and other parts of the arctic and subarctic is the arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea), which breeds across the top of the Northern Hemisphere during summer and arrives at the edge of Antarctic in time for the austral summer. This migration can be more than twenty-two thousand miles annually. Terns migrate offshore over the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and Denali's birds use the Pacific flyway. The first year birds, born here this summer, will not make the trip back north to the Arctic and subarctic next season but will instead spend the northern summer off the coast of Peru and Chile. These are long lived birds; the oldest recorded arctic tern banded in North America lived for 34 years. Changes in ocean temperature and the resulting changes in fisheries resources, particularly small fishes and shrimp, will influence abundance and distribution of arctic terns over the next century. Keep your eyes toward the heavens as the abiding mysteries of migration fill our autumn skies with shore birds, song birds, waterfowl, raptors, and the most visible of all the large, lingering flocks of sandhill cranes.
